The elections yesterday were somewhat overshadowed by both the Royal Wedding and the death of Osama Bin Laden and so the final run-up wasn’t as hyped as it has been for previous elections. I can’t remember the last time we had a referendum, and yet this one seems to have passed many people by.

Reading all the publicity and news about it makes me think that the real winners of this have been the Tory spin doctors and PR people. They seem to have got away with not meeting all their election promises by blaming the Lib Dems as being “a millstone round their necks”. Yet the Lib Dems, who after all are the minority party in the coalition, are being blamed for having to reach a compromise on some of theirs.

The Lib Dems  seem to have made the decision that voting reform is a more important issue than student fees, and so have stuck to the first one and compromised on the second. Yet there seems to be many people who are so upset with the fact that student fees are going to increase that they are threatening to vote against the voting reform seemingly just because the Lib Dems are promoting them. Now if that’s not a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face I don’t know what is!

It will be interesting to see what the result is on the referendum later today, and also what the turnout was for it. When I went to vote yesterday evening they said it had been really quiet all day, so I am guessing turnout will be low all over the country. Such a shame that we ignore rights that people have struggled for us to have.
