Thursday and Friday

Well, yesterday ended up being quite busy and I didn’t have a chance to write what I’d done, so here is both days together.

Thursday:

  • Main item of the day was the workshop on our strategic objectives for next year. This went fairly well and we had quite a lively discussion in our group.
  • I also met with the reps from MCT to discuss budgets and what we could purchase and also how useful the RIN reports on e-journals are.
  • Briefing meeting with the Library Director and other colleagues talking about ERM systems and what our processes are that would need to be accommodated by a new system of this type.
  • sent comments on the library for the periodic programme review after the meeting I went to yesterday.
  • processed a series of book orders.

Friday – today has been mainly a sorting out day, as it has been quite a busy week with alot going on.

  • arranging meetings,
  • editing webpages,
  • tidying up my inbox (really needed doing),
  • working out what I’ve done this week and what needs to be done next week,
  • writing our fortnightly updates on our work with the Faculties,
  • creating new reports on some of what we do with the Faculties,
  • sending people data on our certain types of enquiries they’ve requested,
  • looked into what resources we have in some subject areas and how that could be improved,
  • had a meeting about the targets for our one stop search system (only one meeting today!)
  • orchestra rehearsal,
  • discussed the date of my next meeting with a group of academics,
  • read some of one of the RIN reports on e-journals,
  • cleared some of the piles of paper off my desk,
  • discussed leave policies for some of our staff as they don’t seem to be working in practice and ideas for how we could improve it.

So overall, this has been a busy week. I’m not sure if it has been typical or not – I’m not sure what a typical week is! My house-mate used to laugh when I answered his question on how my day was by answering “bitty”. But I do seem to spend most of my time jumping from one thing to another without being able to spend any considerable amount of time doing one thing. Partly that could be due to the varied role and responsibilities I have, but I do find it difficult to focus at some times too, which doesn’t help!

Anyway, library day in a life round 6 is over, so hopefully this has given you some sort of an insight into what I do.

Wednesday

Today has been another busy day, full of meetings again! My first meeting was to discuss the periodic programme review that will be happenning in a couple of months and how we can input from the Library.

Most of the afternoon was spent in a workshop looking at how we can improve the subject pages on our website. We are planning a new site and are thinking of different ways of presenting this content and how to make it easier for students to use and find what they want. This was followed by a discussion about the workshop on library strategy that I’m helping facilitate tomorrow. And I went straight from that into a 1:1 with one of my team.

Other than those  meetings I have commented on a couple of the proposed project strands for our VLE development, looked at some possible purchases and spent rather a long time trying to get a document onto the iPad!

I also found out today that the book I wrote a chapter for last year has been published, which is quite exciting. It’s called Teaching Information Literacy Online and my chapter is co-written with an academic from the Faculty of Health and Social Care about the work that we did integrating IL & ICT into the Social Work Degree.

varied Tuesday

Well, this morning started with our operational managers meeting, talking about leave policies among other things. Immediately after that I went to a meeting reviewing the implementation of the upgraded CRM system, and other issues to do with the system as a whole. Between the two of those took most of the morning.

I then had a meeting with two of out IT team talking about the spec for a database we’ve asked them to build to log the work we do with the Faculties. My last meeting of the day was to prepare for the workshop on Thursday I’m helping facilitate in looking at what the objectives should be for the Library over the next few years. Inbetween those I was doing some work to prepare for them and also investigating data visualitation tools.

all the things I’ve done today

Well, Library day in a life week has rolled around again – although I have done this before I’ve missed a few of these, and especially as I’m trying to blog more frequently this year (which I am achieving so far!) I will be blogging this week about what I am doing. I lead one of four Faculty facing teams in an academic library, but as MPOW specialises in distance and online learning, it is a very unique place to work.

Today started unlike any other Monday morning, as the system that we use to log enquiries within the Library (and across the University) was upgraded over the weekend. So I spent the first part of the morning making sure that everything was working as it should and that people were happy with the new look and feel of it.

Next I had a meeting with the library reps from the Business School to talk about the budget – where we are and what needs doing to keep us on track for the end of the financial year (end Jul). We currently have money available so we are starting to think about what we could purchase, but as things are likely to be tighter in the future we will be looking for one-off purchases rather than new subscriptions.

When I got back to my desk I spent the rest of the time before lunch preparing for my team meeting and doing various organising things for different training and development events my team are planning to attend. At our team meeting we discussed what we’d been up to recently and also how we could use the new iPad & netbook that we have as a team.

I then had another meeting to plan how we will implement LOCKSS (we joined the UK LOCKSS Alliance at the end of last year). The rest of the day has been spent sorting out various emails and adminy type things, preparing for my meetings tomorrow and planning what I need to do in the rest of the week.

Now to go home, visit the community centre to check out its facilities  (I’m planning my birthday party), and then orchestra rehearsal.

A day in my life at work (5)

Today I had two days of email backlog to work my way through to start with and then I did the following:

  • had a 1:1 with a member of my team where we confirmed her objectives for the rest of the year;
  • wrote a reference for another member of my team who is applying for a place on a part-time MSc;
  • completed my application for a training programme;
  • amended the paper my colleague and I have written on the use of ‘guides at the side’ to meet the reviewers comments;
  • logged what I’ve spent my time on this week in our time-recording system;
  • had various discussions round subscriptions for the next financial year (which starts tomorrow);
  • was told what my responsibilities will be when I am rotaed to be the Duty Manager;
  • discussed what performance indicators were useful for reporting on our work.

All in all this week I have done quite alot of admin. Only really having three days of work has meant it hasn’t been a normal week, although I would find it difficult to describe what a normal week is!
